The BPS core curriculum is developed and monitored by the Birmingham Education Council, a group of 30 administrators, teachers, parents and students recommended by their respective organizations and appointed by the Board of Education.

Curriculum development is guided by Framework for Instructional Design and Evaluation, a district policy which calls for a seven-year design and evaluation cycle for all curricular areas.

Birmingham's core curriculum exceeds Michigan Department of Education requirements in all subjects and integrates core national standards. In addition, the district offers an enrichment program to challenge high achieving students and a comprehensive special education program.
