Birmingham Public Schools sources a local bakery, Aunt Millie’s, within our cafes. We utilize Aunt Millie's whole grain hamburger buns, whole grain hotdog buns, whole grain hoagie rolls, whole, grain dinner rolls, and whole grain bread. Aunt Millie's now processes these items on a line that also processes milk ingredients.

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, Chartwells in partnership with Pierce Elementary School has ditched our plastic straws in our cafeteria. Americans alone discard more than 30 million tons of plastic a year; only 8 percent of it gets recycled and plastic never goes away. Plastic is a durable material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of it is used once and then discarded. Plastic cannot biodegrade; it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. Let’s protect our Earth, and get on board with ditching the plastic!

Condiment Changes Impacting Food Allergies
Chartwells will be transitioning away from Hampton Creek Just Mayo to Kraft/Heinz for mayonnaise. This product change is significant because the new mayonnaise will introduce major allergens that were not present in Hampton Creek: soy and egg. A few things to note:
- Nutrislice will now display soy and egg allergens for any mayonnaise-containing recipes.
- The new products also contain onion and garlic, which although not major allergens, may need to be avoided by students with diagnosed allergies to these foods.
