WHAT CHARACTER EDUCATION LOOKS LIKE FOR A BEVERLY BOBCAT

    Bobcat Behavior Touchstone

Our touchstone showcases our core values of Responsibility, Kindness, Cooperation, and Respect.  It is displayed throughout the school and helps create a common language for our school community.

    Beverly Bobcat Pledge

Each Monday morning, students sing the Beverly Pledge:

I pledge to believe in Beverly School

As a place to learn and grow

By being cooperative, honest, and fair to all I know.

To show respect and be kind to all I meet,

To be responsible and work hard each day of the week,

To strive to be the best I can be,

So all can succeed in our school community!

    Morning Meeting

Regular meetings are held in the classrooms to create a caring classroom community.  The meetings have many elements including a greeting, an activity, a morning message, etc.  They are an excellent time to problem-solve and set the tone for the day.

    Bobcat Choices

Students are taught to use the options on the Bobcat Choices wheel to help problem solve.  Posters are displayed throughout the school and the wheels are painted on the blacktop of both playgrounds.  The choices include: Wait & Cool Off, Go to Another Game, Share & Take Turns, Talk it Out, Walk Away, Ask Them to Stop, Apologize, and Make a Deal.

    Curriculum Integration

Teachers integrate our core values and discussion of ethical issues into the curriculum.  Books discussions include the traits of a character while hard math problems prompt discussions of perseverance.  Learning needs are met with differentiated instruction to help all students succeed.

    Service Learning and Community Service

Students are given multiple opportunities throughout the year to engage in service learning and community service projects.  Some projects are done in individual classrooms while others, such as “Crafts for a Cause”, incorporate the entire school.

    Shared Leadership of Character Education

Our students are involved in character education in many different ways at Beverly, including: Safety Patrol, Service Squad, Bobcat Leadership, classroom jobs, and peer mentoring.

    Green School

Beverly has been a Michigan Green School for many years now.  Our students understand the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.  Students participate in classroom and lunch room recycling efforts, Waste Free Lunch days, and help maintain our playground and rain garden.
