• The field of operations research involves the development of mathematical models to improve decision making at both the strategic and operational levels.  It has broad applicability in industry and government and can also assist in making personal decisions.  This first trimester in operations research focuses on “deterministic” models and builds on the skills of algebraic representation to model decisions without including issues of uncertainty.  We will spend our time developing, solving, and analyzing mathematical models for decisions in relevant, real-world contexts.  We will tackle realistic problems, which are typically large and complex.  To solve these problems, we will leverage technology by making extensive use of spreadsheets and a piece of software called “Solver.”
