“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?” ~ Martin Luther King, Jr. Beverly students have many opportunities to participate in service projects throughout our greater community.
Two annual events, Projects with a Purpose in December and Crafts for a Cause in February, are designed to help Beverly students reach out to others in the community in need. During school year 2019-2020, here is just a sampling of the projects completed by students:
- 30+ fleece blankets for Beaumont Children’s Hospital
- 300+ animal enrichment tubes for Detroit Zoo
- 300+ bead activity kits for Beaumont Children’s Hospital
- 250+ decorated lunch bags and 100+ placemats for Meals on Wheels recipients
- 150 bookmarks for Rx for Reading program
- 75+ Valentines for Evergreen Nursing Center residents
- 60+ thank you cards and care bags for soldiers
- 12+ boxes of groceries for local food pantry
- 75+ fleece scarves for Detroit shelter
The Beverly Bobcat Leadership team chooses different causes throughout the school year to focus their efforts on. In 2019/2020, they adopted animals from the World Wildlife Federation, made a variety of toys for cats and dogs at the Michigan Animal Rescue League and created placemats, cards and snack bags for Meals on Wheels recipients. Money raised from the Hunter's Hut school store is donated to the charity, and the students complete work related to the cause (i.e., publicizing the donation drives.)
At Beverly, we believe that it is important to educate the whole child and to foster long-term social-emotional growth. We have a thriving character education philosophy supported by the 11 principles of effective character education in collaboration with Character.org and Social Emotional Learning supported by the RULER Approach to social-emotional learning from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to support the growth of the whole child. In addition, our teachers and staff have been trained and will continue a 4-year training in culturally responsive instruction professional learning approach that is a pedagogy that builds on the individual strengths of all students and places an emphasis on student-centered instruction.
