Class rules and expectations:  In order to provide a safe, respectful, and caring atmosphere for all students, there are some basic guidelines we must follow.  Students are required to behave according to the "Expectations and Policies for Students" described in the Groves High School Student Handbook.

    Additionally:

    1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
    2. No food or drink except water allowed in classroom setting.
    3. Be on time, in your seat with materials when class starts. Students will follow all seating charts.
    4. Be prepared – homework, notebook, pencils, paper, materials needed etc.  Assignments are to be handed in according to their due dates.
    5. All assignments are to have the student’s name, date of the assignment, class and class period and the name of the assignment on the top margin of the paper or handout.  Furthermore, assignments are to be handed in on standard 8.5 x 11 size paper (bell work will be the exception).
    6. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
    7. No Electronic devices e.g.. IPods, phones, handheld games are not allowed out in the classroom, unless Mr. Higley gives permission.
    8. Remain only in the student areas  -Do not enter storage areas without permission.
    9. Follow all safety rules.
    10. Your work area should be cleared before you leave. (Mr. Higley dismisses the class, not the bell).
    11. Follow the Groves Way Rules.

Should a student demonstrate difficulty adhering to the aforementioned guidelines, consequences may include student-teacher conference, parent/guardian contact, removal from class, detention, and/or referral to the administration.

    Information:

    • Academic Integrity:  It is assumed that all students do their own work.  All written work must be original.  Any talking or communication of any kind during quizzes or tests is academic misconduct.  An academic misconduct report will be filed and parents/legal guardians will be contacted.
    • Homework  -Homework will be given throughout the week.  Late homework will not be accepted without a late pass.  Some homework will be self-graded, some peer-graded, some graded on completion, some collected and graded and some not graded.  You will never know, so assume it will be graded for correctness.
    • Extra Help:  If you are struggling with any concepts or course material, please seek help as soon as possible!  You have a few options:
          • Attend X-Block on Tuesdays.  I generally arrive around 6:30 AM.  I am available to help you until first hour begins.
          • Email me.  We can always set up another time to meet.

Please don't let yourself fall behind.  There are many resources available to help you should you desire extra help!

    Attendance

You should have good attendance because…

    • There is no way to replicate missed class instruction and discussion.
    • Students who are consistently absent tend to fall behind, struggle with class work, and perform poorly on assessments.
    • Participation impacts your grade, and if you’re absent, you cannot participate.

    If you are absent…

    • It is your responsibility to check with Mr. Higley to determine what you missed.
    • You must make up work missed due to absence; if your absence is excused, you will be given the number of days absent plus one additional day to make up any missed work.
    • If you miss a test, quiz, or lab, please see me promptly to schedule a time to make it up.  Failure to do so may result in a zero.
    • Make-up assessments and labs will cover the same material as the originals, but they may be in a different format or include different questions.
    • If your absence from class is unexcused, you will receive a zero for any missed work.
    • Any assignments given before your absence and collected during the absence will be due on the day you return.
    • The attendance policy outlined in the Groves High School Student Handbook will be enforced.  The policy includes several provisions, including the following:
      • "Upon receiving a sixth tardiness, parents will be notified and the student will receive a Saturday detention or similar consequence."
      • "In order to retain privilege of earning both a grade and credit for a class, a student must not exceed a total of eight (8) absences. Upon a student reaching eight (8) absences, they may be placed on an attendance contract."
