Birmingham's Wireless Device Policy

Birmingham's Wireless Device Policy

At Birmingham Public Schools, we are committed to transparency and keeping our school community informed. There have been questions about the difference between the new state law and Birmingham’s policy. Under recent updates to Michigan’s Revised School Code (MCL 380.1303a), public school districts statewide are now legally required to restrict student access to personal cell phones and wireless communication devices during instructional time.

This summer, our Board of Education adopted a bell-to-bell wireless device policy for all students. The policy also discontinues our Bring Your Own Device practice, which means students may only use district-provided devices for instructional purposes and with the permission of a teacher. While these expectations are broader than the minimum requirements of the state law, they provide a consistent expectation throughout the school day and are intended to help students remain focused on academics, relationships, and the overall school experience.
