The Birmingham varsity figure skating A/high team made history by securing the program's second consecutive state championship.
The familiar atmosphere of the ice rink served as a backdrop as Erin Biederman assumed her starting position for Birmingham Varsity Skating. As a senior at Groves, she was no stranger to this moment, but the responsibility of defending the state title weighed heavily on her and her teammates.
The Birmingham Varsity Skating team made history by securing their second consecutive Michigan high school state championship.
Throughout the competition, Biederman exemplified leadership by successfully executing a single axel and double loop in front of the audience. However, it was the impressive performance of first-year student Emilia Nemirovsky that highlighted the team’s depth, as she executed a triple flip and completed a challenging triple-double combination, contributing essential points to the team’s success.
The team’s triumph was not solely dependent on jumps. Lily Nowak, a sophomore from Seaholm, showcased remarkable control with her sustained edges and forward loops, earning accolades from the judges. Additionally, Saige Purther, another Seaholm sophomore, impressed the crowd with her spins, receiving enthusiastic applause.
Biederman’s flying sit spin and twizzle sequence reflected her years of commitment to the sport, while Nemirovsky’s choreographic sequence and combination spin emphasized the program’s promising future.
The team's achievement was further supported by significant performances from Seaholm senior Ryan Pesta and junior Jiya Mathew, whose consistent contributions throughout the season were instrumental in securing the state title.
