“What makes this program special is seeing students discover new favorite authors and genres,” BPS Superintendent Dr. Embekka Roberson said. “The excitement around reading spreads throughout our schools and into homes. That’s a win for everyone.”
“The Elemenlons” secured second place, while “The Preppy Page Turners” rounded out the top three finishers.
Beyond the main competition, organizers presented special recognition awards. “Red Readers” earned the team spirit award, while the best team award went to “Enchanted to Read You.”
The spirit award recognizes not only creative spirit wear but also positive interactions with teammates and other participants throughout the competition.
Hundreds of enthusiastic elementary students participate in the Battle of the Books annually, reading a treasure chest of books during the preparation period. Participants started preparation as early as December as each team is required to have 3-6 students and one adult team coach.
Organizers will announce next year’s book selections in the fall, giving future competitors plenty of time to start their reading journey.
