West Maple Elementary edges out Bingham Farms and Greenfield to capture the 26th annual BPS Science Olympiad.
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – Cheers erupted throughout the gymnasium when West Maple Elementary students realized their school was the overall winner of the 26th annual Birmingham Public Schools Science Olympiad.
"I've never seen such incredible dedication from our young scientists," West Maple Principal Pesmoska said. "These students spent months preparing, collaborating and problem-solving. The end results represents countless hours of curiosity-driven hard work."
Bingham Farms and Greenfield elementary schools placed second and third respectively in the competition, which featured all eight elementary schools — as well as Birmingham Covington — engaging in a host of events across a variety of scientific disciplines. Greenfield entered as the reigning champions.
Throughout the day, students competed in activities testing their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Medal winners raced to the front amid thunderous applause from peers and parents.
Superintendent Dr. Embekka Roberson praised the participants' engagement with complex scientific challenges.
"This competition embodies everything we aim to foster in Birmingham Public Schools," Dr. Roberson said. "Watching these young minds tackle complex scientific challenges with such enthusiasm reminds us why STEM education is crucial."
Unlike traditional academic competitions, Science Olympiad provides a comprehensive approach to STEM education where participants engage in the same interpretation, design and assessment that professional scientists utilize daily.
The annual event has become a cherished tradition in Birmingham Public Schools, inspiring students to pursue science beyond the classroom.
