Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome to Mr. Chappell’s website!
Our 8th grade English Language Arts class emphasizes daily sentence composition, editing, grammar, and the close reading of both informational and narrative texts. We read The Diary of Anne Frank, Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan, The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, and popular science fiction selections (Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, etc.) through book clubs, and numerous text selections from our HMH Close Readers. Major projects include writing a narrative essay from a personal experience, composing a literary analysis (C.E.R.S.), and creating an informational media presentation.
Highlights of my involvement at BPS include: serving as Acting Principal of the Day, designing curriculum work for the C.E.R.S. school improvement writing initiative, working in both the C.A.T. and S.A.L.T. curriculum leadership teams, founding and coordinating the Invictus Mentoring Program, sponsoring the NCTE Young Writers Competition, editing and publishing the Draconus Literary Magazine, serving on the Character Education Committee, running the Fantasy Gaming Club, the Ultimate Frisbee Club, the COSMOS Club, and appearing in Derby Talent Shows.
Outside of school I enjoy playing guitar, watching movies, camping in national forests, crushing half marathons, building personal computers, playing rpg, card, and board games, and teaching film and television screenwriting as a professor at Oakland University.
