My name is Briona McKinney and I am a teacher of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
I have spent most of my teaching career at Harlan Elementary and love being a Husky! I feel very fortunate being a part of such a collaborative team; one that puts the needs of students above everything else. We problem solve together, work hard together, and celebrate (student progress) together.
The Harlan community is aware of the different learners within our school community and is accepting of those differences. One of my favorite things each year is going into the general ed classrooms to talk about differences and more specifially, Autism. It's important that our differences are not viewed as something to be ashamed of, but instead celebrated and something to be proud of.
I consider myself very lucky to be able to spend my days working with, teaching, and learning from the children in my classroom.
I believe that...
in every human being regardless of any outer manifestation of limitation or disability resides an eternal human, healthy spirit.
every human being has the right and responsibility to develop, learn, and grow.
every human being benefits from being a part of a community; I strive to bring people together so that they feel more comfortable and confident together than they do alone in isolation.
