• Seaholm Offers Support (SOS)

Seaholm Offers Support (SOS) is a service organization that supports members of the Birmingham Public Schools community. SOS provides volunteer services and limited financial support to families within the community who experience temporary need. Seaholm parents and students work together with the goal of building a stronger community through acts of kindness. SOS was established in 2008 and over more than 10 years the organization has been able to fund and support a vast array of community needs.  Examples include:

    • Annual $1,000 scholarships to college-bound seniors
    • Thanksgiving grocery cards to dozens of families in need each year
    • Holiday gift giving to families in need each year
    • Financial aid for those faced with sudden emergencies
    • Leaf raking for area seniors
    • Student-organized assistance for those unable to perform household chores

Respecting family privacy is paramount. In most cases, needs are filled anonymously.

Seaholm Offers Support is a 501(c)(3) organization.

A Tax-Wise Way to Support SOS If you are over the age of 70 1/2, the government requires you to take annual distributions from your retirement account - a provision known as the required minimum distribution (RMD). Up to a certain amount, these distributions may be made tax-free as long as they are directed to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, like SOS, an option known as the qualified charitable distribution. This may be an ideal way for parents, grandparents and alumni to support members of the Birmingham Public Schools community in need. For more information, contact Mike Schuchard at 586-295-2099.
