  • Our Vision for Mathematics in BPS:

In Birmingham Public Schools, we believe in mathematics instruction that provides all students with equitable access to collaborative, engaging, inquiry-based instruction that is research-supported. BPS educators strive to develop mathematically proficient citizens ready to apply mathematics in their daily lives, college, and/or career.

BPS teachers of mathematics and administrators position students as:

    • THINKERS. Students are provided with opportunities to engage in productive struggle and to persevere in solving real-world problems. Students see themselves as problem-solvers and doers of mathematics.
    • ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and to engage in conversations by questioning each other, justifying their reasoning, critiquing the reasoning of others, and understanding that there are multiple problem-solving strategies.
    • LEARNERS. Students are supported to make sense of problems and learn through individual and collaborative experiences that emphasize procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and making connections between patterns and relationships.
