In multi age classrooms (grades 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8) and in two-year academic cycles, students learn in an interactive atmosphere where they are challenged to apply and integrate their knowledge. Through interdisciplinary projects, students incorporate and demonstrate their understanding of skills and concepts. Technology is integrated in all subject areas as an essential tool to help students link their learning to the outside world.

There are 108 students in each grade. New third grade students may apply during an open house in December or during a registration week in January. Students may apply for limited openings in other grades in the same fashion. If there are more applicants than openings, a lottery is held. Names selected in the lottery for a grade with no openings are placed on a waiting list and notified of openings in order of their selection in the lottery.  Students must be residents of the Birmingham Public Schools district to register and attend.
