Our approach to Early Childhood Development

Birmingham Public Schools (BPS) early learning programs are committed to providing a nurturing and secure educational setting for young children and their families.

Approach

In a safe, age-appropriate, and engaging environment, children learn and explore as they experience the world. Our play-based programs support each child’s unique potential and promote growth in multiple areas, including:

  • Physical development
  • Emotional development
  • Social development
  • Creative expression
  • Intellectual growth

Staff, children, and families, working in partnership with the community, learn to value diversity and foster:

  • Individuality
  • Self-confidence
  • Love of learning
  • Respect for themselves and others

Curriculum

BPS early learning programs follow the HighScope curriculum, which aligns with the Early Childhood Standards of Quality for the State of Michigan. Our programs focus on building a strong foundation for school readiness and supporting children’s cognitive, physical, social-emotional, and creative development.

Our teachers are trained in early childhood education and understand that children progress through the same developmental stages, but each child grows at their own pace.

Teachers:

  • Plan classroom activities using the comprehensive HighScope curriculum
  • Build positive relationships with children and families
  • Create age-appropriate, stimulating learning environments

We look forward to providing your child with an exceptional early childhood educational experience!
