What is Saturday School?
In collaboration with the Birmingham African American Family Network, BPS offers academic assistance to students of all grade levels who require extra support in any subject. This tutoring service is provided free of charge, although we kindly request a $3 donation to help cover the cost of snacks for participating students. All BPS students from Kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to take advantage of this tutoring opportunity.
Each session commences with a motivational message or an engaging activity facilitated by one of the program coordinators. Students are then paired with a tutor for the majority of the session, allowing for personalized attention and guidance. Towards the end of each session, all participants regroup as a collective to collectively discuss and reflect upon what they have learned. Our aim is to foster a compassionate community where every learner feels supported and valued during each tutoring session.
Our program coordinators collaborate closely with National Honors Society students from Groves and Seaholm high schools, as well as student teachers from Oakland University, to provide effective tutoring services. We also extend an invitation for volunteers who wish to serve as tutors within our program - your contribution would be greatly appreciated!
