    Derby School Schedule

Please see this link here for class times and bell schedule.
PLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE TO SCHOOL ON TIME

Here is the  BPS Calendar 2021-2022 BPS District Calendar for your reference.

    Attention 8th Grade Families

Welcome, In-Coming Maple Families! We are so excited to have you join our Maple Forest here at Seaholm High School. Despite the strange and difficult circumstances surrounding this year, we want you to know how much we look forward to meeting you and having you begin to connect to our students and faculty.

On January 25, we will offer you the chance to get a glimpse into the world of academics, activities, and athletics. In a format similar to the Community Open House in November, we will introduce you to our department chairs, athletic director and community service organizer who will be available to answer questions, but we will also take a deeper dive into the course catalog, daily schedule and other expectations of life as a high school student.

To assist you with this evening, I am sending you a link to our Welcome Class of 2026 site. This site will include videos from our department chairs outlining expectations and requirements for each content area, welcome videos from your administrators, as well as video highlights to get a good idea of Seaholm’s relevant and rigorous academics, competitive athletic teams, and fun and welcoming activities. We ask that you take a few moments to review this information prior to coming on Tuesday night if possible.

The good news is that this information will be available to you to revisit at your leisure once you hear our presentation—no need to take notes!

The orientation starts with a pre-meeting at 6:15 PM if you are interested in learning more about our English/Social Studies/Flex programs. Teachers and department chairs will present an overview of the programs so that you are better able to make decisions regarding which program you’d like to enroll your student in for next year. The overall presentation begins at 7:00 PM.

We look forward to seeing you then via Zoom. The link will be available at a later date.

    COVID Protocols Reminder

In light of COVID Case Increase, please review the protocols used at the building used to manage virus mitigation.

Please report all COVID exposures and COVID positive tests to our attendance line derbyattendance@birmingham.k12.mi.us and a Derby administrator Motterbacher@birmingham.k12.mi.us, HFisher@birmingham.k12.mi.us or FCostello@birmingham.k12.mi.us. It is important for us to have this information ASAP to be able to act accordingly.

Please see below for important COVID Protocols:

If your child is not fully vaccinated (15th day past 2nd dose) they should not come to school if:

Someone in your home is awaiting testing results for COVID.
Someone in your home is COVID positive.
Your child has been exposed to someone awaiting testing results for COVID.
Your child has been exposed to someone who is COVID positive.
Your child should not come to school - regardless of vaccine status - if:

Your child is awaiting testing results for COVID*.
    Your child is COVID positive.
*PCR test results for the student must be shared with the school.

    Zoom Criteria:

To Zoom in, your child needs to have tested positive for Covid (provide documentation to the office) or a close contact with someone who tested positive for Covid. If your child is fully vaccinated and was in close contact with someone who is Covid positive, they may come to school and are not eligible to zoom in as long as they are asymptomatic. If your child is waiting for results on a PCR, please let us know and we are happy to provide the Zoom codes.
Zooming procedures are for COVID related illness and issues

*If you have a question about any of the above or a specific situation, please ask!

    Forensics

Does your child have the gift of gab? Do they like to act or present information? If so FORENSICS might be the perfect activity for them.

Forensics is competitive acting and public speaking opportunity. Students compete in one of 13 different categories. The majority of the categories are individual, although there can be an opportunity to compete with a partner or in a group. Categories range from the interpretative performance of a play, short story, or poem, to a student-written speech of a persuasive or informative nature. The Forensics Season runs from late January through early spring. All grades, with the exception of a few categories, compete against each other (6-8).

  • Derby Middle School Week at a Glance: Week of December 19th

Posted by Sarah Sindelar on 1/9/2022

    12/17/21

    Dear Derby Families,

It was a melodic week at Derby with three different concerts from our band, orchestra, and choir students. Our talented Dragons all put on incredible shows and it was fun to see them perform together again. Big thanks to our music directors, Mrs. Barclay, Mr. Karpinsky, Ms. Sanford, and Mr. Hummel for helping our kids make beautiful music.

On Tuesday of this week, we will be having a fun, "Kickoff to Break" assembly in the gym the second half of the day. It will be by grade level with structured games and music. If your student would prefer a quieter space or you would like your student to not be in a larger group, our cafeteria will be open and staffed as an art space as well. Students just need to tell their teachers they are going to the cafeteria.

On behalf of our entire team at Derby, we wish you and your family a memorable and safe winter break. Thank you for sharing your learners with us.

    Go Dragons,

    Marla Otterbacher

    Athletics Antigen Testing

Birmingham Public Schools will be implementing an optional weekly testing program for all individuals grades 6 - 12 participating in indoor winter athletics. Participation in this program is optional. If a student opts to participate in this program, and they are asymptomatic and test negative on a weekly basis, they may compete and practice without a mask. Masks will need to continue to be worn by coaches and spectators at all times while indoors, per the OCHD Emergency Order and BPS protocols. Individuals will be required to wear masks while not in play (i.e. in locker rooms and on the bench). If an individual does not participate in weekly testing, they will need to continue to wear their masks during competitions and practice. Please note that BPS athletes will abide by the home team’s protocol regarding mask-wearing - i.e. if a home school requires indoor masking for everyone, the visiting team will comply, regardless of testing. More information will be coming from us about this program next week.

  • Derby Middle School Week at a Glance: Week of December 12th

Posted by Sarah Sindelar on 12/19/2021

    12/10/21

    Dear Derby Families,

Our students returned to school this week but our hearts and minds were still consumed with safety. Many conversations were had with our kids surrounding our ALICE protocols and a lockdown with a barricade drill was done on Wednesday. Our students have been asking deep thinking questions surrounding school safety and we will continue having these important conversations with them. You can expect to see more drills focused on other areas of ALICE in the near future and we will be communicating each drill with you.

A big thank you goes to Mrs. Lisa Hart for hosting over 50 Derby girls and mentors last Saturday for a Girls in Stem event. Each participant learned to code and received a Jimu robot. Fun was had by all.

We hope you all have a great weekend.

    Go Dragons!

Posted by Sarah Sindelar on 12/12/2021

    12/3/21

    Dear Derby Families,

We know this past week has been difficult and our hearts go out to the community of Oxford. We hope that today and this weekend you are able to talk to your children and help them process some of their complex emotions. Our staff participated in training regarding ALICE safety protocols today. We will be discussing these protocols with students on Tuesday (12/7) during 3rd hour and we will be conducting a drill to practice these important procedures on Wednesday (12/8), also during 3rd hour. The drill is not meant to cause our students more stress, but we do want our students to be prepared and to reassure them we know what to do should a crisis arise.

Our students can expect lessons in A2 classes emphasizing talking to trusted adults and using the Ok2Say Program. Thank you for trusting us with the most precious people in your lives. We love our Dragons!

    Warmly,

    Marla Otterbacher

  • Derby Middle School Week at a Glance: Week of November 21st

Posted by Sarah Sindelar on 12/5/2021

    11/19/21

    Dear Derby Families,

Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was this week to benefit our friends at the Lighthouse Community Foodbank. Our school proudly donated 1,811 pounds of food this year and the staff was elated. Thank you to our National Junior Honor Society members for organizing the event, Mrs. Lyn Kmiec, club sponsor, and our Derby parent volunteers for helping transport the large donation.

I would also like to send a big congratulations to Mr. Jonathan Hoff and the drama club’s performance of Dracula and Frankenstein Thursday evening. What a pleasure to watch live theatre and our own Derby Dragons showcase their talents. Bravo!

We have no school Wednesday-Friday this week as we celebrate Thanksgiving. We are very grateful for your students each and every day. Thanks for sharing them with us!

    Warmly,
    Marla Otterbacher

    ESSER Funds Survey

ESSER funds, more commonly known as COVID relief federal funding, are available to Birmingham Public Schools with restrictions. BPS administrators are seeking feedback from students, staff, parents and community members (tax payers) to help allocate these funds to best serve students adversely affected by the health pandemic and move all students back on the path of shared, accelerated learning.
The Federal Government has placed strict guidelines on how the majority of this funding can be spent with a focus on learning loss, social emotional learning, summer programming and after school tutoring. Twenty (20) percent of funds are allowed to be spent with more flexibility to uniquely address our needs here in BPS. Please following the Thought Exchange link here to help inform administrators around the use of these funds. This link will expire on Nov. 26.

  • Derby Middle School Week at a Glance: Week of November 7th

Posted by Sarah Sindelar on 11/14/2021

    11/5/21

    Dear Derby Families,

As the first quarter has come to an end, we are so thankful to you for sharing your students with us. We are also grateful for having a successful first quarter including clubs and sports. As you review first quarter grades and teacher comments with your students, (first quarter grades can be found in PowerSchool) we would appreciate if you would take a moment and discuss proper use of social media with your child. We have noticed an increase in unkind posts and photos posted without permission lately. We all know the hurt feelings and lasting damage these types of posts can cause. Your partnership in this matter is appreciated as we make Derby a safe and fun space for all.

Fall conferences are this week. Please see the email from Wednesday, November 3rd for details. You can sign up on the link here. The last day to sign up for conferences is the end of the day 48 hours before the conference.

Please read below for information on our Book Fair and Thanksgiving Food Drive. We hope you have a great weekend and thank you for reading our ENews!

    Derby School Schedule

Please see this link here for class times and bell schedule.
PLEASE PLAN TO ARRIVE TO SCHOOL ON TIME

Here is the  BPS Calendar 2021-2022 BPS District Calendar for your reference.

    Introducing.... The Dragon's Den

Does your child need assistance completing an assignment, or a person to review with before a test? Tell him or her to stop by The Dragon's Den! The Dragon's Den provides a place for students to work with a staff member that will help them with assignments. We meet in Ms. Spennachio's classroom during lunch/rec.
On even days, 7th & 8th graders can attend the Dragon's Den from 11:11-11:51.
On odd days, 6th graders can attend from 12:11-12:51.

Students will report to the cafeteria at the beginning of lunch/rec to get their lunch and a pass to the Dragon's Den, and then report to room 203 with the assignment they need help on, for a working lunch. Or students can save some time, bring lunch that day, and report directly to room 203 with their lunch and their work. There are limited slots available, so be sure to get in early! Attendees must stay the entire lunch/rec period.

    Afternoon Pick up

Beginning on Monday, October 18th, cars may pull up in our front loop all the way through to Derby Road after 3:05 when our busses have left the loop. This will allow for more cars to enter the Derby loop and keep more cars off of Adams. Another alternative is to wait until 3:20 to pick up your student when traffic is significantly less. Our goal is to keep students safe and keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible.

A Message from Transportation: Friends Riding Home on the Bus

Transportation is trying to do the very best they can with seating charts and contact tracing during COVID. Only students assigned to a particular bus are allowed to ride home on that bus. Extra riders will be directed to the main office to call home for a ride. Please help us to continue keeping everyone safe.

    Lost & Found

Is your student missing a lunchbox, water bottle, or sweatshirt? We have dozens of these items along with textbooks, umbrellas, and even eyeglasses! Please have your student check Derby’s Lost and Found located under the stairs in the Counseling Lobby. November 1st is the end of the marking period and all unclaimed items will be donated to charity after that date.

    Introducing.... The Dragon's Den

Does your child need assistance completing an assignment or a person to review with before a test? Tell him or her to stop by The Dragon's Den! The Dragon's Den provides a place for students to work with a staff member that will help them with assignments. We meet in Ms. Spennachio's classroom during lunch/rec.

    * On even days, 7th & 8th graders can attend the Dragon's Den from 11:11-11:51.

Attendees must stay the entire lunch/rec period.

Students Want to Stay After School to Wait for a Home Game?

A new after-school Spirit Club will meet from 3:15 – 4:00 in the Derby cafeteria before every HOME game. This club will provide the students an opportunity to remain after school in a supervised environment until the game begins. The students will be able to:
    * Create posters to cheer on their classmates
    * Listen to quiet music
(Do homework independently (homework help / tutoring not available)
    * Eat snacks that they bring from home. To help us provide a safe and orderly environment for students, food deliveries are not allowed: i.e. Door Dash, Grub Hub, Pizza Delivery, Parent Food Drop-Off

    Students will:

    * Remain in the cafeteria until the game begins
    * Be responsible for cleaning up their area in the cafeteria
    * Attend the sporting event for which they stayed after school

    SWIM COACHES NEEDED!

Girls Swim begins in just over a month. We are in need of new coaches for both of our girls' teams this year. If you are interested in coaching a dynamic group of swimmers for this 8-week season, please let us know! If you are part of Birmingham's swim community, and you know someone who would be a great fit, please reach out! Send an email to Helena Fisher, HFisher@Birmingham.k12.mi.us.
