Character Education, Diversity & Equity (CEDE)
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively & to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."
~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Thank you for your interest in our Character Education, Diversity and Equity (CEDE) work! Last spring, Dr. Daniel Nerad, Superintendent of Schools, introduced his Diversity and Equity Plan Recommendations: A Call for Action to the Board and District, which included a District-level position dedicated to systemic programming for CEDE initiatives.
The focus for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year is the first step of a Continuous Improvement Process called Understanding and Analysis. This first step includes hearing thoughts, perspectives, and ideas to build a shared vision of CEDE work in Birmingham Public Schools. To do so, I will begin with individual building dialogues with staff and faculty members at every school throughout the District. Building dialogues will be so valuable in shaping a shared vision as we move forward with this important work. These dialogues will frame our discussions and develop key themes that will guide our District in the development of CEDE goals, action steps and measures.
Dialogues will also occur with District committees, parent/guardians and student groups. For staff, parents/guardians, students that cannot attend the dialogues, an electronic opportunity to share perspectives will be available at the completion of the dialogues. After the information is gathered and an exhaustive review of District qualitative and quantitative data will occur, all information will contribute to a shared vision with all stakeholders.
I am so grateful and energized by the opportunity to work with all of you to ensure that each student has access to the high-quality educational experience that we provide in Birmingham Public Schools. We believe that our families, parent organizations community leaders and residents are partners in assuring all students have an extraordinary educational experience. Let’s work together to help all students achieve success!
