Important Information:

  • This will be my newsletter for the next two weeks due to Camp next week.
  • On this page, you will find the information for the goings on in my specific classes. If your child has another fifth grade teacher for a particular subject, please see that teacher’s page for information. Or email them at, or
  • Should you need something or have a question that needs my attention, please feel free to email me at

  • Remember the Chapter Two math test will be on Monday, November 4th.
  • Chapter 3 of our math units will have the students multipling and dividing fractions. This unit will begin when we return from camp!
  • Please make sure your child is completing at least 3 times a week. The sooner the students learn their basic facts the sooner they can begin to worry more about a concept rather then their times tables, and math will be much less stressful for them.

  • We are going to continue making inferences and visualizing while we are looking at poetry.
  • Ch. 2 of GUM will continue with concrete, and abstract nouns, personal and possessive pronouns and action vs. linking verbs.
  • Please have your child bring a book to school everyday of the school year. They will have opportunities throughout the day to read and enjoy the book that they have choosen.
  • Spelling will continue with comparative suffixes such as -er, -est, -ier, and -iest.

  • Our first unit in Science is Earth and Sun. The first investigation in our unit is The Sun. Students look at shadows throughout the day. They use this information to monitor the position of the Sun as it moves through the sky, and analyze what this information tells us about time and rotation of the earth to produce day and night.

  • We are going to continue to practice ways to stop bullying. We wrote the introductory paragraph on our narrative writing. The kids learned that you can begin this paragraph with a hook; for example a quote or a question so the reader becomes interested in the topic. Next we will learn about paragraphing.

Social Studies

  • We began to learn about explorers and the tools they used to find the new world, why they went to the new world, and what they brought back with them from the new world.
  • Next we will look at what the difference is between a hero and a villian. The students will pick an European Explorer, research their explorer and determine if they should be considered a hero or a villian.
