Mr. Inloes Room B-3
Course Description
Algebra 1 is an extension of arithmetic into problem solving using variables. This course uses an integrated approach in which connections to other disciplines and the application of algebra to real-world problems are given special attention. Topics studied include real numbers, polynomials, fractional expressions, radical expressions, equations, functions, inequalities, graphing, systems of equations, statistics, probability, matrices, geometry, and problem solving. Emphasis is placed on the appropriate use of technology to enhance understanding of concepts and as a tool for problem solving.

Pencil, paper, ruler, calculator
Grades
Each assignment, quiz, and test will be worth a predetermined number of points. You will receive a percentage of these points based on the completeness (homework and notes) or correctness (quizzes and tests) of your work. Tests and quizzes will be weighted as 80% of your marking period grade; homework, notes, and projects, as 20% of your marking period grade. The grade you earn during the twelve-week marking period will comprise 80% of your final grade, with the final exam making up the remaining 20%. All students will receive a progress report with their current grade halfway through the term. Grades are based on the percentage of possible points you earn (100 93 = A, 92 90 = A-, 89 87 = B+,62 60 = D-, 59 0 = E). You will never receive fewer than half (50%) of the points for any quiz or test. I grade homework on completeness, not correctness. Students can earn full credit on assignments by completing all assigned problems and showing all steps. Late homework will be accepted for the current chapter of study only and will receive a 50% penalty. I also check notes weekly. Tests (30 - 50 points) and quizzes (15 points) may be retaken during X-Block for a maximum of 80% of the points possible. Missing assignments and tests and quizzes on which cheating has occurred receive 0 points.
Behavioral Expectations
Common courtesy should guide you in determining whether behavior is appropriate or not. Strive to demonstrate respect for others as well as yourself. Listen attentively when someone is speaking and do no interrupt. Do not leave your seat without first asking permission. Arrive on time with all your materials every class period (I will adhere to the schools attendance policy). Stow and silence all electronic devices before the start of class; review the policy on pp. 13 14 of your student handbook. Any evidence of cheating on a test or quiz will result in an academic misconduct. Above all, work to create an environment that fosters learning and encourages questions.
Course Goals
In addition to mastering all the topics in Chapters 8 12 in your textbook and Eureka Module 2 (descriptive statistics), you will also develop confidence as you complete worthwhile mathematical tasks that give you the opportunity to develop flexible knowledge and skill and the ability to use mathematics to
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
Reason abstractly and quantitatively
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
Model with mathematics
Use appropriate tools strategically
Attend to precision
Look for and make use of structure
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
Extra Help and Communication
Students who need extra help with class work or wish to make up a quiz or test can find me in Room B-3 during X-block. A math help lab is also available during both lunches in Room B-33 every day. Please take advantage of this help whenever you feel you are having difficulty with the material, or even when you just want to refine your skills and build confidence.
